In fact, when pregnant last time I was receiving a pregnancy email newsletter with what is happening with your baby this week. It was fun to read 40 weeks and "I am sure you are enjoying your new baby by now" when I was still pregnant! Funny.. I guess everyone tends to induce right at 40wks.

Everyone's different, and I like that a midwife will work with that (for example you going over 40 weeks!) Unfortunately midwives are illegal in Georgia (except CNMs). There is a pretty vocal group of midwives here who openly advertise, though, and are trying to get legislation changed. It seems so medieval to me to limit people's birth choices. So yes, I definitely want a midwife, would prefer a home birth but birthing center is fine, but we'll have to see. I emailed a CPM (right?) who has a website and is just 15 minutes away, for an interview. Another issue is our insurance, but Erin tells me she heard of someone who was able to put their CPM birth on insurance. I'm going to do lots of research before I decide. Would love to go with Amy, Laura's midwife, but she is 2 hours away...can't see having the baby in the car!
So, I must ask, what is everyone's problem with having a baby in the hospital, where they can use modern medicine and all the knoweledge God gives people to make the experience safer and better? I guess not having a child and being in the health profession I just don't understand. Laura's (my neice) umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck but she was in position, decended, dialated, but kept bouncing back a little. There was no way to tell without modern technology: palpation and monitoring was normal: she and Ruth would have died at home. I totally believe God is in control, and protects tons of babies and moms at home, but He expects us to be responsible: we live in a time when its irresponsible to endanger yourself or others for no good reason, unless there are some I haven't heard. I'm not trying to be difficult, so Please enlighten me. I just don't understand.
Elizabeth, thanks for your honesty and I think this would be a great topic to discuss (for my benefit if no one else's.) This is something I haven't totally decided for myself yet, but the idea of a midwife appeals to me, especially after hearing about positive experiences others have had. I like the idea of having one caregiver who knows my entire pregnancy history, who is female, and who gets both me and my husband involved and educated. I know other people have had positive hospital experiences as well. It's not as if I would go backward in time and ignore modern medicine. If something is wrong beyond the midwife's ability, she won't hesitate to send you to the hospital...Laura's midwife was very close to a hospital (am I right Laura) and I think that made her patients feel more secure. Really, the main thing for me is getting to feel like I'm taking part in something wonderful and natural, not feel like I'm getting a medical procedure done. (B/t/w I would not mind at all having a caring, involved professional like yourself assist at my birth!) So for me I guess the personal touch and attention are the main things that appeal. This is a touchy (but good I think) discussion; any other thoughts?
The only problem with blog comments is you can speak without thinking. I didn't mean for my comments to spark a debate or to seem so judgemental. I have my own issues to deal with and this issue doesn't really have impact in my life as I'm not pregnant...part of the issue (I;m working on a blog toninght) Just to clarify, today another girl from work announces her 4th unexpected/planned pregnancy from dad #4 and I just feel exasperated instead of glad that a new life is coming into this world. I'm praying for a better attitude and much more patience. I know that you will do what God leads you to do and you will have a safe and happy pregnancy and birth. I love you and will keep praying for you and baby Earl...
I also don't want to start a debate, but just share my own experience. I know this can be a very touchy subject. I had a wonderful and uncomplicated pregnancy and birth. I went into labor a few days before Gracie was due. I go to an ob/gyn office with 3 dr.'s and I love all three. Danny and I felt involved and very educated every step of the way. You have sis-in-laws and friends that can educate you about home birth and tell you about their great personal experiences. For me, I didn't know anyone who had a home birth so I didn't really get the personal side. Even while in the hospital, I never felt like I was there for some kind of medical procedure. My nurses were so good to me. By the time I left, I felt a close friendship with them. I wouldn't change my decision if I had to do it over again and I will probably go the same route if God decides to bless us again. Each mom has a choice to make, and I know that God will show you what to do! Karanena
